Lessons Learned from BSG

  • Leadership is really hard. You have to make decisions that affect so many people and you don’t get a magic crystal ball to tell you how things will work out. And sometimes they will explode in your face – literally.
  • Friendship is complicated, especially between men and women. But we can rise above sexual tension, conflicted emotions, even betrayal and horrible injury…if we are willing to love people more than we love our pride and ego.
  • The military isn’t all bad. It’s a broken human system, but it calls people to something above themselves. At its best it teaches nobility, courage and sacrifice.
  • Never steal someone’s baby and tell them the child died – it will come back to bite you…hard.
  • Tell the people you love that you love them. Your parents failed. Your children disappointed you. The love of your life married someone else to spite you. Get over it.
  • Those people who seem most totally different from you are more like you than you think. Be careful before you start throwing them in brigs or beating the snot out of them (Matthew 5:22).
  • Symbol and meaning are necessary for our spiritual health, but don’t take them to an extreme. Sometimes a mandela in a temple will never be explained and you have to be okay with that.
  • People are complicated. No one wears an all white or all black hat. Watch your judgments of people.
  • Go ahead and give your life to something. Eventually you will die (someone’s carrying the bullet and they don’t even know it yet) and you might as well have spent your time doing something worthwhile, loving people and making your world or spaceship or new planet a better place to be. I would suggest starting with Matthew 5-7 for some stellar start-up ideas.
  • Starbuck rules.
